Yarn-dyed fabric (or "Sakizome" --- so called in Japan) uses the threads deyed before they are woven into fabric.
Checkers and stripes are often fabricated with this Sakizome. It enables you to easily produce multi-color items. Famous Gingham and Barberry checks are also this Sakizome products.
